My latest visit to The Yard Pizzeria in Harpenden was an impromptu midweek lunch — and it reminded me exactly why I keep going back, and why it remains on our Pizza Map.

The restaurant was quiet, with a calm and inviting vibe. The staff were attentive and friendly from the start, and my pizza arrived faster than expected — freshly made, hot from the oven, and absolutely delicious.

This wasn’t my first visit to The Yard, but it’s been a while, and things may(?) have changed hands in terms of ownership. That said, the food and service remain top-tier. Whatever’s going on behind the scenes, the customer experience hasn’t missed a beat.

Final Slice1

Watching Pizza Craftsmanship in Action

One of the standout elements of this visit was the open view into the kitchen. While waiting, I had the pleasure of watching the pizzaiolo prepare dough for the next batch of pizzas. Each portion was measured by hand with precision, and it was clear there was care and consistency in every step.

Meanwhile, the wood-fired oven was being prepped — its flames crackling softly as the heat built. It’s the kind of scene that gives you confidence before you’ve even taken the first bite.

Final Slice2

The Diavola: A Proper Wood-Fired Classic

I ordered the Diavola — a spicy, flavour-packed pizza featuring:

  • A tangy tomato base
  • Fresh, creamy mozzarella
  • Spicy salami that delivered a satisfying heat without overwhelming the other ingredients

The crust was airy, blistered, and perfectly chewy, just as you’d expect from a wood-fired pizza done right. No sogginess, no oil slick — just a balanced, vibrant pie that reminded me why this is one of my go-to orders.

For fans of bold flavours and a bit of a kick, this one’s a winner.

Is The Yard Still Worth Visiting?

Having visited several times now, I can confidently say yes. The Yard Pizzeria remains consistent in all the right ways — from the friendliness of the staff to the thoughtful preparation and quality ingredients.

There are lots of pizza places in Hertfordshire, but not all manage to combine speed, craft, and flavour quite like this.
